SAPS Trainee Programme Requirements (2025)

To qualify for the SAPS Training Programme, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • South African citizenship (proof required)
  • Age between 18 and 35 years at the time of application closing (proof required)
  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or equivalent qualification
  • Proficiency in English and at least one other official South African language
  • Physically, mentally, and medically fit (as determined by the SAPS)
  • Pass a psychological integrity assessment
  • No visible tattoos when wearing the SAPS uniform
  • No previous criminal convictions or pending cases
  • Not declared unfit to possess a firearm
  • Not dismissed from any prior employment due to dishonesty, violence, sexual harassment, or drug-related offences
  • Be willing to:
    • Take an oath of office
    • Undergo security vetting and background checks
    • Serve anywhere in South Africa
    • Allow buccal sample collection and fingerprint verification

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Although not mandatory, preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • A valid driver’s license (minimum: light motor vehicle)
  • A tertiary qualification (NQF level 6 or higher) in:
    • Criminal Law
    • Policing
    • Forensic Investigation
    • Or other relevant fields
  • Grade 12 certificate meeting the minimum admission requirements for:
    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Diploma
    • Higher Certificate programmes

Core Responsibilities of SAPS Trainees

SAPS trainees will be trained and deployed to:

  • Prevent, combat, and investigate crime
  • Maintain public order and safety
  • Protect citizens and property
  • Uphold and enforce South African law

Recruitment & Selection Process

Applicants will go through a rigorous selection process, including:

  • Fitness assessments
  • Psychometric and integrity testing
  • Medical evaluations
  • Personal interviews
  • Security clearance and background checks Verification of:
    • Educational qualifications
    • Driver’s license (if applicable)
    • Citizenship and residential address
    • Social media presence and any illicit online activity

Important Note: Applicants with chronic illnesses or conditions that may interfere with training may be excluded. Any failure to disclose relevant medical information may lead to removal from the programme.
