About the Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership 2025

The Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership aims to equip learners with the foundational knowledge and hands-on training required to complete the Basic Pharmacist Assistant Course, accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).

Successful candidates will receive structured training while working in a Dis-Chem dispensary, learning essential pharmaceutical support skills that open doors to long-term career growth in healthcare and retail pharmacy.

Key Responsibilities and Learning Outcomes

During the learnership, you will gain experience in a variety of pharmacy support functions, including:

  • Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and substances
  • Supporting the preparation and compounding of non-sterile medicines according to standard operating procedures
  • Managing and organising dispensary stock, including unpacking and merchandising
  • Interpreting prescriptions and understanding ethical and legal responsibilities in a pharmacy setting
  • Picking, packing, and labelling medication accurately for patients
  • Performing stock control duties, including expiry management and shelf maintenance
  • Assisting with prescription tracking and follow-ups with patients
  • Handling call centre queries and assisting with medical scheme authorisations (chronic, HIV & AIDS, oncology, etc.)
  • Providing accurate health information to customers and ensuring professional service delivery
  • Reporting stock shortages and ensuring compliance with company procedures

Minimum Requirements and Skills

Essential Competencies

  • Proficiency in English and at least one other official South African language (spoken and written)
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and time management
  • Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and professionalism
  • Computer literacy and solid numerical ability

Advantageous Competencies

  • Previous experience in retail or FMCG environments, particularly at Dis-Chem
  • Knowledge of complementary medicines, family planning, or pharmacy systems (Unisolv, SAP, E-Scripting)

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Dis-Chem Dispensary Learnership 2025, applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Have a clear criminal and credit record (background checks will apply)
